Canadian jazz guitarist and awarded composer/arranger Ross Morgan is based in his hometown of Ottawa. Known for his lush, pianistic chords and his lyrical improv style, he has performed with JUNO award-winning artists such as Pat Labarbera and Ed Lister. He first discovered his love of jazz when he heard Ed Bickert's 1978 album "At The Garden Party". In addition to performing, Ross has interviewed jazz legends such as bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Peter Leitch.
Ross has been heard on CBC’s “Saturday Night Jazz with Laila Biali” and can be seen performing across Ontario at jazz clubs and festivals such as Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival or Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival. He has performed at the National Art Centre with NOMAD, a ground-breaking cross-discipline Soundpainting project combining fully improvised music with gestures, dance and children’s choir. He studied music in Toronto with Jocelyn Gould, Ted Quinlan and Lorne Lofsky.
In Ross' debut 2022 release, "Migration," he strives to preserve the energy of a live concert in an intimate venue, which he considers his happy place. This album showcases his unique voice as an artist, drawing inspiration from legendary guitarists such as Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, and folk singer Stan Rogers. His arrangements aim to bridge the gap between contemporary jazz and Canadian folk music. “Monarch’s Waltz” is about family and loss, expressed through the grief of butterflies.
Ross has quickly become a sought-after musician in the Canadian jazz scene. With his talent and dedication, he will surely make a lasting impact on the world of new music.
