Kepler

Fri, Jun 27, 2025
Fourth Stage
National Arts Centre

Kepler’s music uses slowness as a lens, gradually revealing layers of depth. What might seem simple or static at first becomes poetic, with cracks, mysteries, and miracles unfolding. The pieces, often short and finely chiseled, captivate with their resonances, echoes, and textures, while their melodies are haunting and central to the experience. Drawing influences from Brian Eno, Arvo Part, Schumann, and Keith Jarrett, Kepler's music is a delicate exploration of sound. Their debut album was released in 2019, and they won the French Jazz Migration program that same year.

Adrien Sanchez, born in 1987, began playing piano in South Korea and later studied classical piano and flute in France. He earned a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music and studied with jazz greats such as George Garzone and Joe Lovano. Sanchez has performed at festivals like Banlieues Bleues, Jazz in Marciac, and Jazz sous les Pommiers, and has played with the National French Jazz Orchestra and the Moutin Factory Quintet. He is also the co-leader of Flash Pig, named the best jazz band of 2024 by Jazz Magazine.

Julien Pontvianne, born in 1983, explores slowness in his music through various influences, from Renaissance masses to Indonesian gamelan and Sonic Youth. His approach, which blends intellectualism with sensuality, focuses on long forms, timbres, and continuous evolution. He has been associated with sound ecology and has played in groups like Oxyd, Trojan Panda, and Ensemble 0.

Jozef Dumoulin is known for his innovative use of the Fender Rhodes keyboard, blending acoustic and electronic elements. A sought-after collaborator and bandleader, he explores jazz, experimental, and world music, and has worked with artists like Mark Turner and Arve Henriksen.
