Jazz pianist/composer Peter Hum strives to make music that uplifts listeners with forthright lyricism, strong evocations of moods, and energetic, unfettered improvising. An Ottawa native, Peter has been musically active in his hometown since his high-school years in the early 1980s. Since 2010, as a leader or co-leader, he has released four acclaimed albums of original compositions, which have received airplay on CBC, Radio-Canada and Canadian university radio stations. All of the albums were supported by grants from the City of Ottawa. Two albums also received financial support from the Ontario Arts Council. Largely self-taught, Peter has performed at jazz festivals and venues in Ottawa and across Canada, from Vancouver to Charlottetown. He has shared stages with top Canadian artists including Sonny Greenwich, Pat LaBarbera, Phil Nimmons, and Reg Schwager. At Montgomery Scotch Lounge, his youthful band of fellow Ottawans will include the fiery alto saxophonist Sam Cousineau, the hard-grooving bassist Chris Pond and the propulsive, imaginative drummer Jose Monchito Hernandez Garcia. The group will play tunes from Peter's album Ordinary Heroes, which received a four-star review in DownBeat magazine, as well as as-yet unrecorded original material. In addition to his musical pursuits, Peter has been a journalist with the Ottawa Citizen since 1990.
